# OPTIONAL BACKUP PROCEDURE

## SUPPORT INFORMATION FOR OUR CUSTOMERS

DISCLAIMER: Backing up data, while very important is the responsibility of the computer user and has nothing to do with R*KOM programs - we do not accept any responsibility for backing up and restoring data and do not provide technical support on backing up and restoring data. The following procedure is offered strictly as a convenience for those who have not learned how to do backups. There are many programs that can be used for backing up data. Microsoft provides programs with their operating systems - BACKUP for DOS versions prior to 6.0, MSBACKUP for DOS 6.x and a backup programs for WINDOWS 95/98/ME/XP that can be found by clicking on START, then HELP, then INDEX and then typing BACKUP. There are other commercial backup programs available. Backing up to disks is only practical when you have a limited number of files. Eventually, you will have to purchase other media for backups, like tape drives or zip drives. We feel a second hard drive is the most convenient. There are even removable drives with a handle that can be pulled out and taken home with you. This procedure will not work if any of the files are too large to fit on the disk you are backing up to.

THIS IS A PROCEDURE TO TRANSFER R*KOM PROGRAM AND PROGRAM DATA FILES FROM YOUR COMPUTER TO FLOPPY DISKS - USING D.O.S. COMMANDS

You should have formatted floppy disks with no files on them to use this procedure.

From a D.O.S. prompt,

1) Enter the subdirectory where the files reside.
Type, CD\RKOM (press enter)
If your files are in a different subdirectory, substitute the
directory name in place of RKOM

2) Type, ATTRIB *.* +A/S (press enter)
If this does not work, find the subdirectory where the DOS program
file ATTRIB is located and insert that subdirectory name in front
of the attrib command. You can type WHERE ATTRIB.* (press enter)
if you are in the RKOM subdirectory to find the ATTRIB program.

3) With an empty formatted disk in drive A (substitute B for A if
using drive B), Type, XCOPY *.* A:/S/M (press enter)

When the screen says disk full, insert new disk in drive A and
repeat step 3 (pressing the F3 key will repeat the last typed
command). Do this until all files are copied.

TO RESTORE THE FILES FROM THE FLOPPYS TO YOUR COMPUTER OR ANOTHER COMPUTER

From a D.O.S. prompt,
Type, XCOPY A:*.* C:\RKOM/S (press enter)
Repeat for each disk! - Substitute correct directory name or drive
letter if necessary.

If you just wish to backup just the data files, substitute \RKOM\RKOMDATA
in place of \RKOM in step 1 above. This substitution assumes you are
keeping data in the recommended drive\path (in setup options of each
R*KOM program).

If you already have a set of backup disks generated with the above
procedure, you can create a new set of backup disks with only the
files that are new or changed by skipping step 2 above. We feel
this step should be done at least daily.
